January

I can hardly believe that it is January. I woke up this morning to 60 degree temperatures with a slight breeze. That was a 7:30 this morning. It is going to warm up even more.

I went out on the deck and took some pictures of the yard. The carnelian cherries (Dog Wood) are staring to bloom. The yellow tree in the center of the picture above is the tree. There are all kinds of plants starting to break bud and that concerns me. Since it is still only January, I am afraid that everything is going to start growing and then we will get a late frost and kill everything.

Like the animals, I love the weather but don't know what lies ahead for the fruit trees. I will hope and pray that they make it OK.

  1. This weird weather is no friend to fruit trees, that's for sure. We have had Arctic weather, followed by torrential downpours in the 50s, followed by balmy days, followed by snow. You need a score card! I do hope your trees make it through unscathed.

  2. Hi guys this is my first attempt to write anything on your page. I hope the trees do well, is the arctic blast they talk about on the news going to hit you?

    2. No we won't be getting the arctic blast, actually we are getting warmer weather than usual. I didn't think I would miss the rain but this has been a very dry and warm winter.

  3. I share your concern about the fruit trees. The temperature was up to 73 F. What about the bees? Mine were flying well and bringing in pollen yesterday. Looking through the observation windows, I can see capped honey cells, but are they going to swarm early, then be in for a long rainy spring?
Could that yellow tree be a Witch Hazel? I'm told the bees love it. How are your bees doing?

    1. The tree is a Carnelian Cherry (Dog Wood) but we do have a Witch Hazel which we haven't planted yet and we got it pretty late last year and didn't get it in the ground soon enough. Plan on planting it this week. I plan on putting it in the bee yard right by the hives. The bees seem to be doing very well. We have 4 hives but two of them were a split that I did late last year. I was actually concerned about them this winter but the weather has been so mild that they are doing very well right now. The bees really haven't found the Witch Hazel yet that is why I want to plant in the bee yard. When you look down the posts you can see the bee yard.

  4. Yes it is, although it's still in a pot we plan on planting it this week. We just checked them or I should say Janice did and they were doing well. pulling a lot of pollen from the Filberts and Witch Hazel along with the Heather. I am preying for enough water but not so much the bees suffer.
